Sep 17, 2011 Back in May, I dug up a Hallicrafters 8R40 from one of Seattle's local electronics recyclers, 3R Technologies. It looked like it had been stored very well, had all the tubes, the dial strings intact, no rust to speak of and not even very much dust. This one is a bit different from the others I've worked.

just picked this up one this weekend, it was in an estate sale bundled box of the leftover ham/cb equipment... cant seem to find one for sale online to get a price idea on it... the only one i saw was a sold add, price removed. the reviews ive read all said this is a cool, and at the time 'the keyer' to have.... im a new license holder and have had a fixation on old time strait keys, so ill be looking for a cheep strait key or better yet make one and see if i cant teach my self code.'if it works''... the 2 rear tubes do light up.... its wired 'correctly according to the manual' with an RCA plug out to transceiver and the jumper is in place to run the internal spkr... I saw a video on YouTube that showed some one keying on one with out it being plugged in to a radio so i guess if it does work ill have myself a good old vintage practice keyer..... '' untill i getz me an old time tube radio to talk me some dots and dashes on some day soon'' ...... all the tubes that i see light up after warm up and the mercury key switch on the front panel lights up and switches from low, to hold, to high, and the tubes in back switch also with the selection switch moving positions it came with the original plug for wiring a key.... a black wire, red wire, and a braided ground..... the manual doesn't say what the red and black are but it shows wiring the ground to center and black and red on each side...... SO MY QUESTION is after pricing it is im guessing the shorting out of the 2 different wires on the ground gives you the 'dot or the dash', and if im right, ??? i can or should be able to touch the red or black to the ground and id be making my own 'paddle connection ' and i should hear a tone ... dot or dash... i want to test it that way but i don't want to mess it up if my thinking isn't correct on how the thing works..... please let me know if im on the right track and will shorting the red or black wire to center /shielding give me a keying tone with out having a key...lol again till i make one.......and find 'Old Timmie Keys' to start my collection..... any info on price and if there still as sought after as they were in the past and the posts iv read online.... 74 thank you and have a great day Neil ![]() Comments are closed.
